Dr. Lustig's Message

August 2009

Dear Parent and/or Guardian:

It is with great pride that I welcome you and your student to Eldorado High School for the 2009-2010 school year. We are eager to do whatever it takes to help maximize your student’s academic achievement.  The first step towards ensuring your student’s success is to connect your student to school through relevant curriculum, engaging activities and nurturing adult communication. Student success takes a total team effort, a commitment to your student’s present success and future goals and aspirations. We have some of the finest staff in the county that is ready, willing and able to guide your student to graduation and towards becoming a responsible, productive member of our community.

Three years ago, Eldorado was bursting at the seams with over 3500 students on one campus. We addressed this overcrowded condition by establishing a Freshman Preparatory Academy, located seven miles away from the main campus. This coming school year, we are glad to announce that we will once again be housed on one campus, thanks to the opening of Sunrise Mountain High School, which has alleviated any and all overcrowding issues. We were so pleased with the results of the Freshman Preparatory Academy and subsequently, the Sophomore and Phoenix Credit Retrieval Academies, that we are providing these academy experiences for our students on our “main” high school campus this school year. The Freshman and Sophomore Academy students will be located in our newest building on campus (the 800 building) and the Phoenix Credit Retrieval Academy will still be located in its own wing in the main school building.

Eldorado High School has experienced tremendous academic growth over the past two years as evident by our students’ performance on the Nevada High School Proficiency Exams (NHSPE). In 2007-08, our school achieved adequate progress in 38 of 39 Adequate Yearly Progress categories, as established by the No Child Left Behind Act. This past year, we had our greatest Senior NHSPE pass rate ever, our greatest Sophomore NHSPE pass rate ever (first time test-takers) and showed tremendous gains in our Junior pass rate in a number of testing subgroups. We are greatly expanding our Advanced Placement class offerings this school year and are in the planning stages for a theme-based vertical academy, beginning with the 2010-11 school year (details to follow throughout this school year). Additionally, we’re determined to continue to enhance the basic skills capacity of each and every one of our students and will begin a school-wide initiative that focuses on reading and math state standards. Every class period will begin with a 5-7 minute skill review/refresher that will provide students and teachers with formative data in regards to any areas in need of further remediation. These skill refreshers will benefit all students, whether they are looking to do well on the SAT/ACT or to become proficient and graduate.

We strongly encourage your participation in our Parent Advisory Council (meets the third Wednesday of every month at 5:30 p.m. in the main building conference room). This council provides a viable means for parents/guardians and the school to collaborate on ways to continue to make Eldorado a better place for students. Lastly, please join us as partners in your student’s education. We seek to prepare your student for post-secondary opportunities and work tirelessly to provide them with the tools needed for continued success. Proper dress code, punctuality, effort, good attendance and a positive attitude are key ingredients for student success, as well as best practices in almost all post-secondary endeavors; your support in these areas will greatly help us to help your student.

Please review the enclosed registration information which outlines the opening of school procedures. Thank you in advance for being part of our Sundevil family. We know that a child is the most precious gift in the world to a parent/guardian; we are honored that you have entrusted us with the education, safety and growth of your most precious gift! Best wishes for an awesome 2009-2010 school year. Go Sundevils!

Respectfully,

Dr. Ron Lustig,

Principal
